an overdue post

By: j | July 24th, 2008

As the title implies, this is a long overdue post. I suppose in many ways my first post for PSV should have expressed this but in other ways I wanted to have the readers slowly digest an overall theme and relationship the club has with its fan base. If you haven’t already noticed, this isn’t simply a championship club but this is family, in-fact an extended family that stretches from the pitch to the fans.

I’ve spent my career over the last three decades within this sport and as the economic structure has changed all too often we’ve seen the relationship between players and fans change, not to mention the lifestyle approach of the players themselves. That isn’t condemnation of the entire sport, far from it, however I just wanted to point this out so that on the opposite side of the equation I can emphasize the genuine relationship PSV and other Eredivisie clubs have with their fans.

All too often in this sport we hear of transfers and contracts far beyond normal financial comprehension. Amongst the five (or is it “seven” now) star resorts vacationing footy players ease back in, it sometime seems that the reason why we all learned to love this game has been lost. I love this beautiful game for some many reasons but most of all how it brings us all, from across the world, together. Said in many languages, in many different styles, we each paint our vision of the game slightly different but in the end, it is so extraordinarily beautiful. I’ve coached players from across the world, where the only language we spoke, was the one on the pitch but in-the-end we learned to work together as a family. That is the true beauty of the beautiful game and all the worlds riches, every gleaming bauble and precious trinket cannot buy that. I’m pleased to say in the country that gave us Totaalvoetbal that beauty in the beautiful game exists. It’s the back-beat in every song that is sung on the pitch, it is a stroke in every extraordinary pass.

I suppose as I bring this long post, that is quite overdue, to an end I should tell you a bit about todays practice. The dedication, the hard work, young players growing and emerging with confidence and the older veterans with a gleam in their eye. Practices were hard in days sun with a visible spike in intensity. However the real story, as you may have guessed, is how this group is coming together as a team. If you are a long-time fan of PSV or the Eredivisie as a whole, take a good look at these photos. Look at the smiles, the laughter, the fans always near-by and the players taking the time to give to stop, chat and sign autographs for them. In the end, like me, you’ll realize the beauty of the beautiful game is alive and well.
