Atlético Madrid Champions League match preview
By: j | November 26th, 2008PSV faces Atlético Madrid in a Champions League match later today tied with Olympique Marseille and needing points if they are to advance to the UEFA Cup. The match will be remembered for a peculiar setting given that due to disciplinary action of UEFA, the match will be held at an empty Vicente Calderon Stadium.
Prior to the match PSV manager Hubb Stevens commented of the setting:
“I think it is harsh on the PSV fans, who feel punished for something that has nothing to do with them.”
Per their opposition he noted:
“We hugely respect the qualities displayed by Atlético, but we are not worried.”
Javier Aguirre is without significant injuries while Huub Stevens called upon the following squad for the match:
Isaksson, Cássio Ramos; Addo, Bréchet, Maza, Pieters, Salcido, Zonneveld; Afellay, Bakkal, Culina, Méndez, Simons, Wuytens; Dzsudzsák, Lazovic, Koevermans and Nijland.
PSV halted a dreadful four-match skid with a 4-0 victory over Heracles Almelo this weekend but memories of Atlético 3-0 demolition of them at Phillips will not be forgotten. While Atlético is not running at their top capabilities, Sergio Agüero so completely dominated PSV two months ago that they surely will be confident of victory. To succeed in Madrid, PSV must display a more physical defensive approach and be patient with their attack.
I will report on the match as it concludes.
