completely dominated
By: j | September 17th, 2008How else do you put a 3-0 dismantling at home other than that? PSV was blown apart by Atlético Madrid on a brace by Sergio Agüero and a third goal by a resurgent Maniche. As stated in the match preview PSV would need to pay extra care to keep those two under-wraps, which they didn’t and they paid dearly for it. A loss like this in an important home match puts the club under severe pressure now to off-set this loss with away victories.
At no stage was PSV in this match as the Argentine international littered the goal at the nine and thirty-sixth minute. The domination continued eleven minutes after the break with a Maniche goal sealed the victory although there could have been significantly more bloodshed.
After the match Huub Stevens commented:
“It is disappointing to start the Champions League group stage with a 3-0 defeat, at home, but I hope we will learn from this game.”
“We knew beforehand we would face a tall task. The lads are obviously disappointed and so am I, but we’ll have to face reality. We have played only one game and we still have five matches to go.”
“We can learn a lot from this game. Atlético struck at the right moments and that’s what we would like to do as well.”
Time to regroup as PSV faces Liverpool next Wednesday.
