Sparta Rotterdam match preview

By: j | September 12th, 2008

It seems somewhat ridiculous how the season stops after one week for the international break, however such is the start of the on-again, off-again Eredivisie season. After demolishing FC Utrecht 5-1, PSV welcomes Sparta Rotterdam to the Philips Stadion.

Foeke Booy’s first match against ADO Den Haag was a dreadful affair where they lost 5-2 in front of their home fans and while just a morsel early to suggest this but it looks like a very long year for Sparta. It was a shoddy display in which ADO played a man down for over forty minutes and still managed to build upon their lead with two goals. Kasteelheren are hoping (and dreaming) about wiping the slate clean but that doesn’t appear very likely in PSV’s home opener.

most recent meetings at Philips Stadion
23-01-2008 PSV – Sparta Rotterdam 3-1
25-10-2006 PSV – Sparta Rotterdam 7-0
05-11-2005 PSV – Sparta Rotterdam 3-0
28-04-2002 PSV – Sparta Rotterdam 3-0

PSV will be without Nordin Amrabat, who will start serving a two match ban as well as Jan Kromkamp Bas Roorda. Sparta isn’t reporting any injuries although based upon the first week, I’m not sure if that is a good thing. If there is an advantage (and we’re talking silver lining in a very dark horizon) for Sparta, its that much of PSV will be tired from international duty and without question looking ahead to their Champions League match against Atlético Madrid next Tuesday. I expect Hubb Stevens to juggle todays lineup to reflect this as well but there is no reason to suspect this will be a close match.

I will report on it as it concludes.

On psv.netwerk.to is written that Sparta’s first keeper is injured. Mendéz seems to be delayed and Culina was ill last week.

Bertil – just saw that myself. Are you watching the match? Do you think we should have a live blog or basically just talk back and forth since we’re the only ones – lol
